Marc Maron Documentary ‘Are We Good?’ Acquired by Utopia (EXCLUSIVE)

Independent and documentary film distributor Utopia has acquired the North American theatrical rights to “Are We Good?,” the Marc Maron biographical documentary that premiered at SXSW earlier this year.

Directed by Steven Feinartz, “Are We Good?” shares the life story of the actor, comedian and podcast host. It specifically emphasizes Maron’s self-reflective journey through grief after unexpectedly losing his partner, filmmaker and actress Lynn Shelton, to acute myeloid leukemia in 2020. The film chronicles how Maron returned to the stage in the wake of this tragedy while also exploring his career trajectory over the course of 40 years in the film and comedy industry.

“Are We Good?” includes exclusive interviews with comics John Mulaney, Nate Bargatze, David Cross and Michaela Watkins as well as footage from Maron’s 16 years hosting the acclaimed podcast, “WTF,” which had guests including President Barack Obama, Andrew Garfield, Patton Oswalt and many additional recognizable faces.

Feinartz has previously directed stand-up specials for various comedians, including Maron’s own “From Bleak to Dark” on HBOMax. Regarding “Are We Good?,” he states, “Marc let me into his life at a time when most people would’ve shut the door. What we captured isn’t just about grief but about what happens after, when you’re still standing and still making jokes because that’s all you know how to do.”

Feinartz produced “Are We Good?” alongside documentarian Julie Seabaugh and Anchor Entertainment founder Ethan Goldman. Anchor Entertainment, Feinartz Department produced with Truant Pictures, Sipur Studios, Indus Valley Media, Radiant Media Studios and 800 Pound Gorilla Media as EPs.

Utopia will release the film in theaters this October, coinciding with the finale of Maron’s “WTF.”
