SXSW 2026: The 15 buzziest world premieres from ‘I Love Boosters’ to ‘Wishful Thinking’

Leave it to SXSW to keep Austin weird. The 2026 edition of the Texas-based film festival is once again chock-a-block with dark comedies, gonzo horror films and prestige pictures that are slightly more askew than the ones that play the fall film festival circuit. Let’s just say that it’s no accident that Everything Everywhere All at Once started its long road to a Best Picture statuette at SXSW instead of Venice.

Gold Derby looked over this year’s lineup and selected 15 buzzy world premiere titles that seem certain to find an audience — and maybe some awards attention — beyond the Austin city limits.

Amazing Live Sea Monkeys

Who’s in it: Yolanda Signorelli and the Sea Monkeys

What’s it about: Get the backstory on those infamous mail-order “pets” that Harold von Braunhut invented decades ago — and learn how his widow, Yolanda, is trying to win back the rights to the family legacy.

Why it’s buzzy: The Sea Monkey saga should be instantly familiar to any kid who picked up a comic book from the 1960s into the 1980s and was instantly captivated by the hand-drawn ads promising a “bowl full of happiness.” Of course, the reality of these critters — and their controversial creator — was very different, should provide a compelling hook for a documentary account.

Campeon Gabacho

Who’s in it: Juan Daniel García TreviñoLeslie Grace, and Rosario Dawson

What’s it about: A Mexican immigrant (Treviño) looking to make a new life for himself on the U.S. side of the border ends up in the place he least wants to be — the boxing ring.

Why it’s buzzy: The latest film from writer-director Jonás Cuarón — son of two-time Best Director winner Alfonso Cuarón — promises to be a timely tale that hands Grace one of her most high-profile big-screen roles since Batgirl was scuttled. We’re rooting for a dramatic knockout.

Dreamquil

Who’s in it: Elizabeth BanksJohn C. Reilly, and Juliette Lewis

What’s it about: Reason No. 14,034 why we should all be wary of robots: After returning from a retreat, the matriarch (Banks) of a near-future nuclear family discovers that the helper ‘bot who temporarily took her place has no intentions of leaving.

Why it’s buzzy: Call this one The Metal Hand The Rocks the Cradle. Cowriter-director Alex Prager‘s combination of domestic drama and sci-fi intrigue promises the opportunity to blend thrills and satire. Not for nothing, but we saw how well The Housemaid performed with moviegoers — just imagine the ruckus that would have been raised had Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried both been T-800 models.

Forbidden Fruits

Who’s in it: Lili ReinhartLola Tung, and Alexandra Shipp

What’s it about: A bored teenager (Tung) is initiated into a witchy coven led by Reinhart and Shipp that preaches sisterhood… but practices something else.

Why it’s buzzy: Every generation deserves its own version of The Craft, and this Diablo Cody-backed take may just be the one that takes root with Gen Alpha. The early trailers also promise a sly Sapphic angle that should give it extra juice with genre fans.

I Love Boosters

Who’s in it: Keke PalmerNaomi Ackie, and Demi Moore

What’s it about: It’s never easy to distill a Boots Riley joint to a single sentence, but here’s an attempt: A fashion icon (Moore) is targeted by Palmer’s ace shoplifting squad looking to give back to their community.

Why it’s buzzy: Riley’s first feature film since 2018’s Sorry to Bother You promises to be the Robin Hood-meets-Devil Wears Prada mash-up we never knew we needed, but can’t wait to try on for size. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled on the filmmaker’s always-lively social media accounts for plenty of bonus content leading up to the movie’s May 22 release.

Love Language

Who’s in it: Chloë Grace MoretzAnthony Ramos, and Manny Jacinto

What’s it about: When an up-and-coming author and wedding vows ghostwriter (Moretz) reconnects with an old flame (Jacinto), she discovers that he’s getting hitched to one of her clients.

Why it’s buzzy: With a logline like that, it’s clear that writer/director Joey Power grew up on vintage ’90s and early aughts rom-coms. And those throwback qualities should be nicely balanced by the casting of contemporary favorites like Moretz and Jacinto. We’re hoping to fall in love with this one.

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice

Who’s in it: Vince VaughnJames Marsden, and Eiza González

What’s it about: A pair of wise guys (Vaughn and Marsden) go toe-to-toe with the heart of their shared lady love (González) on the line.

Why it’s buzzy: As one of the few major legacy studio productions — in this case, 20th Century Studios — to premiere at SXSW, BenDavid Grabinski‘s crime comedy will have that particular spotlight to itself. And civilians won’t have to wait long to see it; the movie drops on Hulu on March 27.

My NDA

Who’s in it: Three real-life non-disclosure agreement signees

What’s it about: Ever wonder what life under an NDA is like? Juliane Dressner and Miriam Shor explore real world examples of how those draconian contracts can impact your day-to-day existence.

Why it’s buzzy: As NDAs become an increasingly popular tool among America’s business elite — up to and including our current White House resident — this documentary should function as a helpful and timely primer on the perils of signing on the dotted line.

Over Your Dead Body

Who’s in it: Samara WeavingJason Segel, and Timothy Olyphant

What’s it about: An estranged couple (Weaving and Segel) head off to the wilderness with plans to resolve their issues by any means necessary — including murder.

Why it’s buzzy: With MacGruber mastermind Jorma Taccone back behind the camera, expect another cult comedy in the making. It’s one of two blood-drenched comedies that Weaving is bringing to Austin along with the Searchlight sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.

Seekers of Infinite Love

Who’s in it: Hannah EinbinderJustin Theroux, and John Paul Reynolds

What’s it about: After their sister joins a doomsday cult, a supremely eccentric family has to put their squabbles aside to mount a rescue mission.

Why it’s buzzy: Twenty years after Little Miss Sunshine stormed Sundance, it’s good to know that the star-powered dysfunctional family comedy remains a film festival staple. Seeing Einbinder take her first steps out of the Hacks universe ahead of the show’s fifth and final season should be interesting as well.

Sender

Who’s in it: Britt LowerRhea Seehorn, and Jamie Lee Curtis

What’s it about: Paging Lumon Industries. When Lower’s recluse starts receiving package after package from an unknown sender, her latent paranoia kicks in and quickly takes over her life.

Why it’s buzzy: The dynamic duo of Lower and Seehorn alone elevates this to must-see status. It helps that writer-director Russell Goldman is adapting his own award-winning 2022 short film, which freaked out festival audiences around the country.

Stormbound

Who’s in it: Jeff and Sarah Gammons

What’s it about: Forget Helen Hunt and Glen Powell — go for a ride along with two real stormchasers as they pursue — wait for it — the perfect storm.

Why it’s buzzy: Shot with Imax cameras, Miko Lim‘s documentary promises to be one of the most immersive non-fiction accounts of extreme weather that we’ve seen yet. But it’s also got an emotional hook courtesy of Jeff’s battle with an illness that threatens to bring his storied stormchasing career to an early close.

The Saviors

Who’s in it: Adam ScottDanielle Deadwyler, and Theo Rossi

What’s it about: A couple (Scott and Deadwyler) on the verge of splitting up discover a surprising cure to their marital woes — renting out their AirBnB to a potential criminal.

Why it’s buzzy: It’s been fun to see Deadwyler embrace her funny side on HBO’s Rooster, and Scott is always good for more than a few laughs. This darkly comic premise sounds like the right vehicle to let them both shine.

The Sun Never Sets

Who’s in it: Dakota FanningJake Johnson, and Cory Michael Smith

What’s it about: After taking a break from her current boyfriend, Wendy (Fanning) rekindles a relationship with an old flame that sparks a rivalry between the two men.

Why it’s buzzy: It’s been a minute — make that six years — since acclaimed mumblecore auteur Joe Swanberg has released a new movie. As an added bonus, this one is something of a New Girl reunion with both Johnson and Lamorne Morris in the cast.

Wishful Thinking

Who’s in it: Lewis PullmanMaya Hawke, and Randall Park

What’s it about: The world literally revolves around Julia (Hawke) and Charlie (Pullman), a pair of lovers whose fluctuating emotional states inspires all sorts of larger fluctuations from earthquakes to stock market tumbles.

Why it’s buzzy: Hawke and Pullman are already two of the most popular next-gen Hollywood stars, so pairing them off in a sci-fi-laced romance is no strange(r) thing. Our only wish is that they somehow convinced their famous ’80s dads to share the screen for the first time in cameo appearances.
