‘Song Sung Blue,’ ‘Minecraft Movie’ and ‘Sinners’ Lead Music Supervisors Guild Awards Nominations

The music behind “Song Sung Blue,” “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners” lead the nominations for the 16th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards.

The ceremony honors outstanding achievement in the craft of music supervision in film, television, documentaries, advertising, trailers and video games.

“Sinners” leads this year’s contenders, earning three nominations recognizing Niki Sherrod’s music supervision and the film’s two original songs. Additional film contenders include “Wicked: For Good,” “F1” and “Marty Supreme.” Top TV contenders include “The Studio,” “Dark Winds” and “Poker Face.”

Both songs from “Sinners” are also on the Oscars shortlist. “I Lied to You” is written by Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson and performed by Miles Caton, who also plays Sammie in the film. The second, “Last Time (I Seen the Sun),” is a soulful duet performed by Alice Smith and Caton and co-written by Smith, Caton and Göransson.

Guild president Lindsay Wolfington and vice president Heather Guibert said: “In a year that was challenging for our city and our industry, we are excited to see an abundance of great work from the music supervision community — congratulations to our nominees! Pairing the right music and visuals is essential for evoking emotion, setting tone and transporting audiences to new worlds. We have seen time and again how this vital pairing elevates content across all visual media. This year’s nominees once again highlight the importance of music supervision to storytelling.”

The Guild of Music Supervisors is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2010 with the “goal of preserving and promoting the critical role of the music supervisor within all forms of media.” The Guild holds numerous educational and networking events throughout the year, including the annual State of Music in Media Conference.

The winners will be announced during their awards gala at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb. 28. Performances and celebrity presenters will be revealed at a later date.
